Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel

In 2016, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District (“CBBTD”) applied to the Virginia Transportation Infrastructure Bank for a loan, secured by the toll revenues of CBBTD, for the construction of a tunnel parallel to the existing Thimble Shoal Tunnel. The $50 million loan financed the construction of a new tunnel between the two southern-most man-made islands in the lower Chesapeake Bay. This new tunnel will exclusively carry two lanes of traffic southbound, while the existing tunnel will be converted from a two-way traffic to carrying two lanes northbound. This tunnel is the first in the mid-Atlantic region to be constructed using a tunnel boring machine.
